USS Roosevelt Completes 4th FDNF-E Patrol

NAVAL STATION ROTA, Spain - The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) returned to Naval Station Rota, Spain, following the completion of its fourth Forward-Deployed Naval Forces-Europe (FDNF-E) patrol in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations, Feb. 4, 2023.



NRL Researcher Receives MGB-SIAM Early Career Fellowship

WASHINGTON - NRL researcher Dr. Steven Rodriguez was awarded an early career fellowship sponsored by the Mathematically Gifted and Black (MGB) community and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Rodriguez is leading efforts at NRL to develop machine learning technology to drastically reduce the computational expense of high-fidelity physics simulations, including additive manufacturing, hypersonics, and free-surface fluid dynamics.



NSWCPD Employee Receives Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award

PHILADELPHIA - The Arleigh Burke Class (DDG 51) Destroyer Shipbuilding Program Manager Capt. Seth Miller presented the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service award to Toni A. Checchio, the lead systems electrical engineer for DDG 51 Class Land Based Engineering Site (LBES) on Jan. 18, 2022 for her noteworthy performance during her over 39-year career at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Philadelphia Division.

The Hospital Corpsmen of Iwo Jima: Stories of Valor and Sacrifice

FALLS CHURCH, Va. - At 0900 on February 19th, 1945, the first assault waves from the 4th and 5th Marine Divisions hit the beaches of Iwo Jima. Embedded within these units were corpsmen like Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Stanley Dabrowski, of New Britain, Conn., who remembered the “tremendous noise,” concussion of small arms fire, explosions of artillery and sounds of shells. “As we were coming into the beach we were under a rolling barrage of 16-inch guns of the battleships. You could just feel those shells going over your head.”
